Is it better to wear a Spandex ACE brace or sports tape in a skate?
You probably remember (sorry! haha) that about a week ago I sprained my ankle on the ice. My ankle has healed up fast, and I'm thinking about getting back on the ice fairly soon. What do you recommend for wrapping up my ankle in? Right now I'm wearing one of the white spandex ACE braces (which my doctor recommended) just whenever I need to do extensive walking or if my ankle is bugging me. I like it because it's supportive, but I'm not sure how it will work out in a skate. I'm concerned that maybe it wouldn't really fit in there and/or would irritate my foot? So I bought some Johnson and Johnson "COACH" sports tape. Would that be better? It's not as supportive as the brace...right? But it would better work within the skates?
If it remotely matters, I have Graf Edmontons and am about FS 5.
Did your doctor say you could return to the ice that soon? Just check with him first and ask about wearing the brace. If you can, go back for a checkup and bring your skates to get the doctor's opinion.
If he says it's okay and has no recommendation about the brace vs. tape, I'd lean towards the brace because it's one piece. The tape could roll up or shift, creating a torniquet, which would be bad. You do have to worry about the fit - extensive use of a thick bandage will reshape your boot after a while.
I don't remember how you injured your ankle on the ice, but the boot should act as a cast. I know skaters who've be able to skate through broken foot bones, toes, and ankle injuries. It really depends on whether or not the boot caused the injury. Edmontons are pretty stiff boots and could be causing the problem, so adding stiffness through a brace or tape might aggravate the injury.
Just for future reference: sports medicine doctors are much better at managing sports-related injuries.
