Will the doctor do selective reduction from triplets to single?
I just found out that I'm pregnant with triplets. It's kind of a shock since I got pregnant the old fashioned way. The doctor recommended selective reduction since I have gestational diabetes, but he kept on talking about from triplets to twins. Is there a way to go from triplets to a single fetus? Will the doctor do that?
Yes, they can reduce from triplets to singleton. When I got pregnant with quads, the doctors suggested we do selective reduction from quadruplets to twins. You should consult a perinatologist or maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) doctor before making any decisions.
We lost the fourth baby early in the pregnancy so we ended up with a triplet pregnancy thus we did not have to make the difficult decision to reduce. Our doctors told us the success rate of triplets as opposed to twins is about 1% thus many doctors advise against selective reduction on triplets because what you gain in terms of success rate is negligible when you reduce to twins. So, if your doctor think you can carry twins, then triplets should be manageable (from a medical perspective) though much more difficult to manage than a twin pregnancy. Also remember, selective reduction increases the chances of miscarrying the entire pregnancy. Before making a decision consult high risk doctors.
I had gestational diabetes too which occurs in many multiple pregnancies because the demands of multiple placenta on the mother increases insulin levels. I had a dietitian helping me with my diet. I also took glyburide. I never had to take insulin shots and my gestational diabetes was managed quite well without long term effect on my children's health and mine.
Personally, I would never do selective reduction--its a polite way of saying abortion. Have you looked into how they do it? They wait towards the late first trimester to see which baby/babies are stronger, then they insert a needle in the weaker babies' heart to inject a chemical to stop the heartbeat.
