is pankration really "the ultimate martial art"?
You know the spartans used it in greece during the persian wars and I hear most asain martial arts derrived from it.
Hands down, no. I love the Greeks as much as the next guy. But it is impossible to develop an ultimate martial art. Pankration has very formidable attributes, being the foundation of almost all western ground styles, as well as its contributions to MMA; however, a removal striker style like Xiaolin Gung Fu, where fighters are trained to jump in, strike and then remove themselves from harm, would have no difficulties dismantling a fighter whose prime style was Pankration.
This is due to the style of warfare Pankration was developed to accommodate. Soldiers would be fight in close quarters, only going into unarmed combat when they had fallen out of the hoplite ranks or had becomed unarmed. Thus the style was made only to defend the soldier until he managed to rejoin the hoplite formation or scrounge up a weapon of some degree.
Contary to this, Xiaolin Gung Fu was developed for soldiers who were lightly armed and armored because of the great need of mobility. This need of mobility led to the creation of a style that would minimize sustained damaged by having the practitioner constantly move in and out of danger.
